  • Pookie is an 8 year old cat at the Humane Educational Society in Chattanooga who loves playing with toys and cuddling for attention—she is ready for a loving furever home. Those interested in adopting her can visit the shelter at 4155 Randolph Circle.  Local 3 News
  • New adult changing table—wheelchair charging stations have been installed at Riverview Park in Chattanooga. Mayor Tim Kelly praised the upgrades as essential for making the park accessible to all.  Local 3 News

CRIME NEWS

  • Tommy Joe Hartley, a 58-year-old man, is charged with attempted murder and aggravated domestic assault—he is accused of inviting his ex-girlfriend to his Varner Road home on March 22, beating her until she was unconscious and chaining her for three days until she escaped on March 25, with charges from a February incident and a court appearance set for April 3.  Local 3 News
  • East Ridge police arrested 39-year-old Brandon Blount after stopping his U-Haul on March 25 and finding his seven children in hot, filthy conditions—children were taken to a hospital and his ex-wife was notified while he faces charges for aggravated child neglect and child endangerment.  Local 3 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Chattanooga Girls Leadership Academy was honored with a national Community Engagement Award from Building Hope for its work in education and community impact. The award recognizes the school as one of 12 leading public charter schools and highlights its role in educating over 300 students from 6th through 12th grade.  Local 3 News
  • Hamilton County parents remain concerned about potential school district staff cuts even though Superintendent Doctor Justin Robertson said teachers and assistants would not lose their jobs—reports from a school board member indicate that exceptional education assistants have already been cut. Parents complained about the short notice for last week’s budget meeting and will seek more answers at the Monday evening meeting at Dalewood Middle School.  News Channel 9

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The U.S. Department of Agriculture halted $500-million in food shipments, cutting more than $1-million in support to the Chattanooga Area Food Bank and leaving rural areas with fewer nutritious food options. The food bank is working with Feeding America and nearly 200 partners to fill the gap—asking local residents to donate food, money, or time.  Local 3 News
  • County Mayor Weston Wamp said on Monday in an emailed statement that he will present a fiscally responsible budget that does not require a tax increase amid a major spike in Hamilton County's home values—staff have begun mailing reappraisal notices and a revenue-neutral tax rate is expected to be announced over the summer.  Chattanooga Times Free Press
