CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Chattanooga police charged 51-year-old Corey Washington with criminal homicide after video showed him backing out of a driveway on Towerway Drive and then driving his car into 44-year-old Kevin Kendrick, who died on April 7 from heavy blows—police say Washington’s claim of self-defense does not match the footage. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Hamilton County Schools Superintendent Justin Robertson previewed a proposed budget for the upcoming school year that shifts special education staffing—resulting in the movement of four teachers—and cuts magnet school transportation, which has raised concerns among board members and parents. The school board will review the plan on April 17 before voting on it on May 8. Local 3 News
- ➤ Grace Baptist Academy, hit five years ago by Easter tornadoes, will receive a $37 million federal grant to rebuild its damaged campus as FEMA and Rep. - ➤ Chattanooga residents will have trash and recycling collected as scheduled on Good Friday, April 18, if they set their containers out before 7:00 a.m.—the City Landfill, Household Hazardous Waste Facility and Wood Recycle Center will be closed on Good Friday while the Refuse and Recycle Collection Centers will be closed on Good Friday and Sunday, April 20. - ➤ Hamilton County leaders took part in National Crime Victims' Rights Week at the Family Justice Center in Chattanooga while state lawmakers consider Marsy's Law to give crime victims stronger constitutional rights—local officials said the proposal would include critical notification rights. - ➤ Starting May 1, Hamilton County will ban residential and commercial burning until September 30 under the rules set by the Chattanooga-Hamilton County Air Pollution Control Bureau. Residents who want to burn yard brush must obtain a permit—city applications are due by 4:00 p.m. on April 23 and unincorporated area applications by 4:00 p.m. on April 29—while recreational fires of approved size are allowed.
