COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Partnership for Families, Children and Adults has announced a $2 million capital campaign to build the first transitional home in East Tennessee for girls aging out of foster care, which will offer housing, mentorship, and life skills support. The new home will mirror an existing house for boys and has early funding from the Robert F. Stone Foundation, Chuck Chitty, and an anonymous donor—providing a vital resource for at-risk youth.  Local 3 News
  • Chattanooga resident Tammy Setliffe lost her son to an overdose in 2023 and started Light Inn Darkness—an outreach program that gives backpacks with Narcan, snacks, water, and toiletries to opioid users at Inn Town Suites—to help those in need. Since its launch, the group has distributed 10,000 Narcan packages with donated supplies and her own funds to support the community.  Chattanooga CW
  • The Running of the Chihuahuas returns on Saturday, May 3 at First Horizon Pavilion where many chihuahuas will race for the ROTC XVI trophy & prizes, with gates opening at 12:00 p.m. Local food trucks, vendors, live music by artists like Sarah Mootz, Sayoko, Lilac Line & Bias, and contests for best dressed and team spirit add excitement to the free event that benefits the Humane Educational Society.  Local 3 News

CRIME NEWS

  • A Hamilton County man was sentenced to 23 years in prison on April 22 for fatally shooting a coworker at Chattanooga's Amazon facility on August 9, 2023—family members testified during the hearing about the deep loss they experienced.  Chattanooga Times Free Press

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Hamilton County school leaders announced that Sequoyah High School will begin its transformation into the Future Ready Center at North River starting the upcoming school year. The new center will serve students from Red Bank, Hixson, Soddy Daisy, and Sale Creek + aims to impact 800 students in four years by offering hands-on career and technical training while they stay enrolled at their home school.  Local 3 News
  • Hamilton County Schools will open the North River Future Ready Center at Sequoyah High School next school year, where students from Soddy Daisy, Hixson, Red Bank and Sale Creek will split their day between their high school and career training—adding programs in culinary, nursing and veterinary technology. The center is expected to grow to 800 students over four years—showing the district’s effort to expand career and technical education.  Chattanooga Times Free Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City officials changed two stop signs on the 14th Street bikeway this month to help cyclists move smoothly and slow speeding drivers — a measure prompted by community feedback from a local bike ride. New signs will soon warn drivers at key intersections — an effort to improve safety on this alternate route to Main Street.  Chattanooga Times Free Press

HEALTH NEWS

  • Health inspectors from Hamilton, Catoosa and Walker counties inspected local restaurants for the week ending April 22 and scored each on a 100 point scale. Some restaurants like IHOP and Mr Burrito failed key sanitary standards due to issues such as barehanded food preparation, moldy fruit and unsanitary equipment — officials said they will reinspect locations that do not meet standards.  Chattanooga Times Free Press
  • A Chattanooga mother, Rowen Smith, honors her late son RJ during Donate Life Month by sharing his choice to be an organ donor that saved two lives in a Florida scooter accident—she now serves as a Donate Life Ambassador urging Tennessee residents to register as donors.  Local 3 News
  • The Hamilton County Health Department launched Bingocize, a Live Well, Age Well program for aging adults that addresses physical, mental, and health issues while focusing on fall prevention (a 10-week program in partnership with Purpose Point Community Health Center).  Local 3 News
