  • Chattanooga veterinarian Dr. Shannon Dawkins expanded her nonprofit Compassion Copper Canyon to help animals in homeless camps by vaccinating about 20 pets in its first month—she plans to return monthly for booster shots and free spay and neuter services—and asks volunteers with animal care, social media, or fundraising expertise to join the effort.  Local 3 News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • UTC’s center for innovation and entrepreneurship now bears the name of Chattanooga businessman Max Fuller, who donated $5 million to expand paid internship programs and foster local entrepreneurial training. The donation comes as UTC moves the center into the expanded Fletcher Hall—an 81,000-square-foot facility expected to boost opportunities and be completed by 2028.  Chattanooga Times Free Press

CRIME NEWS

  • Former House Speaker Glen Casada and former chief of staff Cade Cothren faced federal corruption charges when a jury was selected during day two of their trial, and defense attorneys hinted at strategies arguing that commissions and kickbacks are interchangeable—opening arguments were scheduled to begin Thursday morning.  Chattanooga Times Free Press

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Hamilton County’s Air Pollution Control Bureau said that seasonal burning restrictions will begin on May 1 while residents with approved burn permits can burn yard brush only on approved days until April 30+ permit applications must be submitted by 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 29 in affected areas. The new rules aim to reduce hazardous air pollutants from burning vegetation.  Local 3 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Chattanooga's city government released a new mobile app and online portal—Cha 311—that lets residents request nonemergency services such as pothole repairs and graffiti removal. Users with automatic updates already have the new app installed while others must download it, and city staff are still finishing older system requests.  Chattanooga Times Free Press
  • A shooting near Hixson High School last November led state lawmakers to pass House Bill 783 that gives cities power to tighten rules for sober living homes. The law—requiring homes within 1,000 feet of schools to meet safety and zoning standards and secure a health provider referral—is now awaiting Governor Bill Lee’s signature.  News Channel 9

HEALTH NEWS

  • Erlanger whistleblowers reached a settlement with the hospital system after alleging that staff billed insurance for overlapping surgeries without proper oversight—ending a federal lawsuit that began in April 2021 and was closed by a judge on April 15.  Chattanooga Times Free Press
