- ➤ Tennessee lawmakers voted to replace the state-run Achievement School District with a three-tier system to help low-performing schools that gives local districts more options and starts by the 2026-27 school year — the House passed the bill 75-15 and it now goes to Gov. - ➤ Conservationists and local supporters welcomed the reintroduction of a bipartisan congressional bill that will direct the U.S. Forest Service to study if the nearly 300-mile Benton MacKaye Trail can be named the 12th National Scenic Trail. Lawmakers — including a former Chattanooga resident — back the bill which could bring more tourism and economic benefits to communities along the trail. Chattanooga Times Free Press
- ➤ A water main break on April 25 shut down Caine Lane in the 3900 block as Tennessee American Water crews began repairs with no set reopening time — the Chattanooga Division of Transportation also announced planned closures for construction, including Jersey Pike on April 28 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and North Hawthorne Street closed today from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Local 3 News
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Toni King explained that self employed people with an individual health plan must enroll in Medicare during the three month period before turning 65 in July since their coverage does not count as group benefits—delaying sign up could result in steep penalties. She advised Greg to begin his enrollment now so that his Medicare coverage starts on July 1. Chattanooga Times Free Press
