CRIME NEWS

  • Chattanooga Police arrested 24-year-old Reginald Siler on April 24 for shooting at a group outside Dream Chattanooga on Glass Street on January 26 — a security guard returned fire and a Hamilton County Grand Jury charged him with attempted first degree murder and reckless endangerment.  Local 3 News
  • Former Hixson Rep. Robin Smith testified on April 29 about her role in an alleged kickback scheme at the corruption trial of former Speaker Glen Casada and aide Cade Cothren—she detailed using the alias 'Matthew Phoenix' to mask identities—and defense lawyers challenged evidence including around 60 text messages.  News Channel 9
  • An East Ridge man is on trial in Chattanooga for alleged torture of Bosnian prisoners nearly 30 years ago with evidence showing he beat two unarmed men during the war, and his hearing is set to continue through Friday and may extend into Monday as he also faces a separate passport fraud charge.  Chattanooga Times Free Press

  • This weekend, Chattanooga residents can enjoy a range of local events including the free Nightfall concert series kicking off Friday at Miller Park, the first Frazier Festival on North Shore, and the inaugural Porchfest in St. Elmo that offers live music and family activities. ECONOMY NEWS

  • Hamilton the Musical created 250 jobs and provided full-time work for set builders, ushers, and other staff during its two-week run in Chattanooga. CEO Nick Wilkinson (of the Tivoli Theater Foundation) said the show proves that the city can host major Broadway productions.  Local 3 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Hamilton County educators testified Tuesday that proposed budget cuts may reduce key supports like school social workers, counselors and nurses amid an $18.5 million deficit and lower-than-expected tax revenues. The school board will review a revised budget tomorrow—voting is set for May 8 as officials remain divided over funding decisions.  Chattanooga Times Free Press
  • The Howard School will soon launch a multi-million dollar campaign to restore its historic auditorium into the Roland M. Carter Arts Centre with a kickoff event on Sunday, May 4 at 5:00 p.m. (an initial $150,000 is already committed) to honor its legacy as Tennessee’s first public high school for the Black community.  Local 3 News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A study by Project Apis m shows that 842 beekeepers reported losing 1.6 million colonies between June 2024 and March 2025 in Tennessee—with commercial losses averaging 62% and economic impacts exceeding $600 million. Shannon Ingram of Lazy Elk Apiary in Bradley County warned that these losses may put our food supply at risk since bees play a key role in pollination—especially for almonds.  News Channel 9

  • Chattanooga resident Cynthia Stevenson said she has been in financial distress since a collapsed sewer line near her Talley Road home forced costly repairs starting in January—over $6,000 to date. City workers visited on Tuesday, apologized for the delay, and urged her to apply for the Moccasin Bend program to help cover repair expenses.  News Channel 9
