COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Chattanooga chapter of Sleep in Heavenly Peace builds and delivers free beds to children who would otherwise sleep on the floor. Since launching in 2019, the nonprofit has provided over 5,000 beds and now has nearly 600 pending requests—volunteers help assemble and deliver complete setups for children ages 3 to 17.  Local 3 News
  • The Chattanooga Public Library has introduced MindSpark Memory Kits to help those with dementia reconnect with old memories. The kits include puzzles+ water painting and conversation cards and can be checked out for 21 days from all five library branches.  Local 3 News

CRIME NEWS

  • On April 29th, attorneys for former legislative aide Cade Cothren served a subpoena to former Rep. Robin Smith’s lawyer outside the federal courthouse—raising a dispute over attorney-client privilege during her testimony.  News Channel 9
  • Former Rep. Robin Smith testified in court that she spoke 'in error' about Phoenix Solutions— a company that handled lawmakers' mailers in early 2020— and admitted she knew she was lying while she faces an honest services fraud charge from a deal reached after her home was raided in January.  Chattanooga Times Free Press
  • Chattanooga jewelry store owner Rick Davis appeared in court Thursday after FBI agents raided his home and business in early April—law enforcement still blocks his store on Brainerd Road—and he now faces charges for passing worthless checks and theft.  Local 3 News
  • Thursday marked 365 days with no homicide in Avondale as city leaders, police and a local violence prevention group worked together to lower violence—an important change for an area once averaging three homicides a year.  Chattanooga Times Free Press
  • Chattanooga man Demarcus Napier confessed in August to murdering his girlfriend, Brooke Killings (he was indicted on March 24 on charges of first‑degree murder, tampering with evidence, abuse of a corpse, and unlawful export of human remains) and his next court date is set for June 2.  Local 3 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Chattanooga apprenticeship hub has introduced an AI tool called Celeste that helps employers find overlooked talent for work-based training programs. The hub said Celeste will let apprentices show skills beyond resumes & match them with new and in-demand career paths.  Chattanooga Times Free Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A Tennessee bill would make it a Class B misdemeanor to intentionally approach a police officer within 25 feet after they order a person to stop—critics say the law may hinder recording police actions. If passed, the measure will go into effect July 1.  Local 3 News
