ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Hamilton County Rescue crews pulled a Vanderbilt University student out of Blue Spring Cave near Sparta after he became too weak to exit on his own on Friday night. The operation took several hours, involved over 2,000 feet of crawling, and used a World War II-era communication device — he eventually managed to walk out on his own.  Chattanooga CW

  • Hotel Chalet in Chattanooga was named one of the most unique hotels in the world by Tripadvisor and is the only U.S. stay to make the list. The historic hotel, housed in a former train station at the Chattanooga Choo Choo, has a pool, courtyard and the restaurant Elsie's Daughter—making it a standout lodging choice.  Local 3 News
  • In June, White Duck Taco will open on McCallie Avenue near Highland Park and Orchard Knob, where local owners are repurposing a brick building into a restaurant and bar with outdoor seating. The new spot will serve tacos, have a full bar, and offer live music and movie nights—details also include a partnership with a new local brewery to be announced later this year.  Chattanooga Times Free Press

CULTURE NEWS

  • This weekend in Chattanooga brings a range of events including Dolly Days in Ringgold from 7:30 a.m.-5 p.m. with live music and contests, Mother's Day markets in Collegedale and at First Horizon Pavilion, and ShudderCon at Camp Jordan with horror attractions on Saturday from 10 a.m.-7 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., while art shows, comedy acts, film screenings, concert programs, sports events and theater productions across local venues offer something for everyone.  Chattanooga Times Free Press

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Public Education Foundation in Chattanooga said its Project Inspire teacher training program was hurt by federal funding cuts after nearly $400 million in AmeriCorps funds were terminated earlier this year. PEF held a meeting last week with prospective teachers who earn a $22,000 living allowance— and is working with Hamilton County Schools and the University of Tennessee to find a way to keep the program running.  News Channel 9

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Tuesday morning, Hamilton County announced that its Veterans Services Office would add two new officers to bring the staff to three and reduce wait times for veterans. The county is also checking satellite expansions in Soddy-Daisy — Collegedale to speed up claims processing and improve services.  News Channel 9
  • UTC's Department of Public Safety and Police Department began a national emergency casualty care training at the Metropolitan Building on May 6 and will continue until May 9 to prepare police, fire and EMS professionals for emergencies. Extra police presence is expected near campus during simulated armed intruder scenarios—sponsored by the Tennessee Higher Education Commission.  Local 3 News
  • City officials presented the Fiscal Year 2025–2026 budget proposal on Tuesday that targets investments in infrastructure, public safety, affordable housing, and transit. Adjusted for inflation, the proposed budget is lower than two years ago while allocating funds for road improvements, transit, and services without raising pay for police and firefighters.  Local 3 News
