ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ A tree fell through two townhome units on Taft Highway early Sunday morning — trapping one resident who was rescued by Signal Mountain Fire Department while utility companies and a building inspector were notified and no one was hurt. Local 3 News
- ➤ Traffic is at a standstill on I-75 northbound between East Ridge exit and I-24 after a truck flipped and set a car on fire — seven to eight vehicles are involved and crews are extricating passengers as severe injuries, including one juvenile, have been reported. Local 3 News
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Chattanooga Police arrested Hixson property owner William Gilbert—operator of Hixson Haunted Hollow—on May 9 for aggravated burglary and felony theft after a resident reported on May 5 that tools worth $4,000 were stolen from their home and vehicle when Gilbert allegedly locked them in a semi-trailer. CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The Cumberland Folk School hosted a mushroom foraging class at Sequatchie Cove Farm where experts from Midway Mushrooms (from Sewanee) taught about mushroom growth, uses, and safety for wild picking. The session helped participants learn key details about the history and sustainable techniques behind gourmet fungi. Chattanooga Times Free Press
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The federal government cancelled a $20 million grant for the Alton Park connector trail that was meant to join disconnected communities by stretching 2 1/2 miles from a West 33rd Street apartment complex to East Lake. Officials had announced the funding in September. Chattanooga Times Free Press
- ➤ Incoming county attorney Janie Varnell said she removed herself from lawsuits where she represented two individuals against Hamilton County. She said the lawsuits—filed before her appointment—will not affect her ability to serve the county when she takes office in July. Chattanooga Times Free Press
- ➤ Chattanooga’s first responders participated in the NREMT’s Tactical Emergency Casualty Care course held at the Metropolitan Building from May 6 to May 9—sponsored by the Tennessee Higher Education Commission to train police, fire, and EMS professionals in caring for patients during simulated armed intruder scenarios; no action was required by local residents. - ➤ City officials are planning to add free parking to the current $5 city sticker tax to make parking more convenient for locals — the plan will need work with the Hamilton County Clerk, CARTA, and private parking operators, and community groups have suggested the added benefit may help downtown businesses. - ➤ Attorneys for walk-on football player John Weidenbach and rower Grace Menke filed a court brief arguing that the NCAA's proposed remedy for the roster-limit rule does not fully protect athletes who lost their spots. Judge Wilken is accepting objections through Tuesday while the NCAA and plaintiffs have until Friday to respond — a restriction the filing said allows schools to bypass proper restoration —.
