COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Volunteers are needed at Chattanooga National Cemetery to place nearly 50,000 flags on headstones starting Saturday, May 24 at 8:00 a.m. Volunteers will also retire the flags on Saturday, May 31 — parking is provided.  Local 3 News
  • The EPA has withdrawn its $20M commitment for the Riverwalk expansion project, and the Trust for Public Land is moving ahead with the 2.6-mile Alton Park and Clifton Hills Connector to link the Riverwalk with Clifton Hills Elementary. The trust will look for other funding sources—its plan aims to create safer walking routes and better stormwater management for the community.  Local 3 News

  • Defense attorneys argued Monday that former House speaker Glen Casada and ex-chief staff Cade Cothren made rookie errors while starting a small political consulting company linked to Phoenix Solutions—a secret vendor that operated from late-2019 until mid-2020.  Chattanooga Times Free Press

CULTURE NEWS

  • The century-old Chattanooga Theatre Centre is breaking ground on a new restaurant project this fall and is seeking a chef to create a menu that features locally sourced ingredients. Bruce Komiske and Rodney Van Valkenburg said the space will offer indoor and outdoor seating along with event facilities and is expected to be complete in two years—adding a fresh revenue source for the theatre.  Chattanooga Times Free Press

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Hamilton County Schools announced three new principal assignments for the next school year, naming Rachel Turner for Collegiate High, Sarah Yarbrough for Ooltewah Elementary, and Amanda Baron for the North River Future Ready Center. Turner works as an assistant principal at Tyner Academy and Yarbrough has served seven years at Middle Valley Elementary, while Baron—previously co-principal at Sequoyah High—will lead a center that begins serving half-day students after Monday’s appointment.  Chattanooga Times Free Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Death row inmates filed a court motion on Monday asking a Davidson County judge to allow redacted review of Tennessee’s plans for using pentobarbital in lethal injections and to delay upcoming executions, including Oscar Smith’s scheduled for May 22, because they allege the state is buying the drug through gray market channels+ their attorneys claim this secrecy violates constitutional protections.  News Channel 9
  • CDOT is closing parts of downtown starting today at 9:00 a.m. until Sunday at 9:00 p.m. as it prepares for IRONMAN 70.3—key roads include Riverside Drive, Chestnut Street, and Power Alley with detours and traffic controls in place for race activities.  Local 3 News
  • Hamilton County Mayor Weston Wamp announced he has proposed adding $5.8M into the County Roads Improvement Fund for projects like Hilltop Drive expansion and new roundabouts on East Brainerd Road—County Commission members will vote on the allocation at their next meeting.  News Channel 9

HEALTH NEWS

  • Hamilton, Catoosa and Walker County health departments inspected Chattanooga area restaurants for the week ending May 13 — the scores showed numerous issues in food safety practices such as onions stored in mop buckets and rusty equipment. Restaurants that do not meet critical standards will be re-inspected to ensure proper food handling.  Chattanooga Times Free Press
