CRIME NEWS

  • Duane Sanders, a former Chattanooga teacher, faced trial Tuesday on 19 counts of child sexual abuse at Wallace A. Smith Elementary School, as prosecutors identified 9 victims. Defense witnesses testified that student responses may have been reflexive due to trauma — the trial continues as experts challenge the evidence — additional updates will follow.  News Channel 9

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Chattanooga City Council passed Mayor Kelly's proposed fiscal year 2025-2026 budget today, approving funds for public safety, infrastructure, and affordable housing with investments in roads, transit, early learning centers, and more. The Council will vote on the final reading on June 10th.  Local 3 News
  • Hamilton County's lowest property tax rate since 1941 was announced on Tuesday by Mayor Weston Wamp and Assessor Marty Haynes, setting the rate at $1.51 per $100 of assessed value—down from $2.23 last year. Two-thirds of county residents will see lower or unchanged tax bills despite rising property values, though some municipalities may adjust rates separately.  News Channel 9
  • UTC will deploy the nation’s first smart crosswalk system in early August after receiving a $500,000 grant to boost pedestrian tracking and traffic safety in Chattanooga—this system will adjust crosswalk lighting and alert drivers and emergency services to help reduce response times.  Local 3 News
  • Drivers using Three Notch Road in Catoosa County face delays as crews nearly finish milling and patching and will begin final asphalt work in the next few days—drivers should use caution when traveling between Battlefield Parkway and Highway 41.  Local 3 News
  • Hamilton County announced that rising home values led to a historic low property tax rate of $1.5157 per $100—down from $2.23 and the lowest since 1941. Chattanooga residents pay both city and county taxes—totaling about $3.06 per $100 of assessed value.  Chattanooga Times Free Press
