ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ On Sunday evening, a kitchen fire on Carterwood Lane in Hixson caused about $10,000 in damages from a cooking accident and the Dallas Bay Volunteer Fire Department responded at 5:30 p.m.—no injuries were reported. Local 3 News
BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ Several major Chattanooga companies will receive state tax refunds of $10,000 or more from the state— a plan designed to help avoid lawsuits, state officials said— although some firms noted the refunds are modest compared to their tax bills. The refunds are expected to be processed soon while affected companies maintain that the relief does not greatly change their annual tax burden. Chattanooga Times Free Press

- ➤ On June 8, a man barricaded himself in a Lee Hwy. motel room and tried to set it on fire, prompting a large response from the Fire Department and Police Department — officers later found him dead from smoke inhalation. Local 3 News
- ➤ Kilmar Abrego Garcia returned to the US from El Salvador and is now in federal custody in Tennessee after his mistaken deportation, and he faces new human smuggling charges from a 2022 traffic stop + serious abuse allegations. His case now moves to the court system as officials work to prove the charges against him. Chattanooga Times Free Press
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The University of Tennessee is considering raising undergraduate tuition and fees at five campuses, including UT Chattanooga which would see tuition rise from $8,458 to $8,712 and mandatory fees increase from $1,990 to $2,050. The UT Board of Trustees will discuss the proposal on Tuesday, July 1 and Tennessee residents can submit comments until Monday, June 23 (6:00 p.m.). Local 3 News
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Hamilton County commissioners agreed on a travel allowance of $17,500 per commissioner in the proposed 2026 budget, marking a $2,500 increase from last year. Chair Jeff Eversole said the decision came after feedback on a higher proposed raise and that commissioners can request an increase—if at least six calls are received—to $20,000 at the next budget hearing on June 11. - ➤ After a destructive storm on Saturday evening, the Chattanooga Fire Department advised residents without power to use generators only outdoors—avoiding enclosed spaces—and to use flashlights instead of candles while warning drivers about flood risks. Local 3 News

- ➤ GreenTech Homes purchased a 162-acre tract off Tunnel Boulevard in Eastdale, which means a planned psychiatric hospital will not be built on the site. The property had been flagged since December for a large development intended to add around 1,600 residential units—GreenTech will now pursue a different vision for the area.
