COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Chattanooga will begin its Fourth of July celebrations with Pops on the River on July 3 at Coolidge Park—featuring a concert by the Chattanooga Symphony & Opera—and continue with Red, White & Blue Day at Creative Discovery Museum and a fireworks finale at AT&T Field on July 4. Other tri-state communities will also host fireworks and family festivities leading up to Independence Day.  Chattanooga Times Free Press

BUSINESS NEWS

  • GE Appliances completed a $180 million investment at its Roper plant off Broomtown Road in LaFayette, adding two 500-foot assembly lines and automation that boost production and set a starting wage of $17.50 an hour (effective June 30). The plant grew its workforce from about 1,800 to roughly 2,500 and introduced robotics training (supporting long-term operations).  Chattanooga Times Free Press
  • Michele Mason, president of BBB in Chattanooga, warned that scammers falsely use tariffs as an excuse to delay refunds and charge extra fees for online orders, with reports showing one shopper received no response after two months. In 2024, 30.3% of fraud reports to BBB involved online purchase scams—many consumers lost money and are urged to inspect ads carefully.  Chattanooga Times Free Press

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Mountain City Club began building at Cherry and Seventh streets soon after its charter was announced, and locals marveled at its blue stone walls and red roof. By September 28 (1890), membership had reached 125 with new officers moving the club forward while some critics questioned its ties to alcohol, and later events like billiards games and fine dinners raised money for charity.  Chattanooga Times Free Press

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A new study found that poverty in Chattanooga fell by about 3% from 2013 to 2023 while the gap between Black and white residents narrowed. However, job growth did not help every group equally.  Chattanooga Times Free Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Former state employee Ted Boyatt sued Tennessee, the legislature, and House Speaker Cameron Sexton after he was fired in June 2024 for raising concerns about campaign finance and corruption. Boyatt alleges he faced retaliation after requesting advisory opinions from the state ethics bureau (he also reported to the FBI) and his lawsuit seeks judicial relief for his claims.  Chattanooga Times Free Press

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Collegedale city commissioners approved a scaled-down Bell Farms plan for 102 homes at 10419 Lee Highway by developer Dash LLC. The revised proposal includes a 50-foot buffer (to address local privacy and visual impact concerns) and limits density to 3.19 units per acre while eliminating an entrance on White Oak Valley Circle to reduce traffic.  Chattanooga Times Free Press
