COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Chattanooga Bakery is launching its 'Patriotic Pies' campaign that will match MoonPie purchases for active-duty troops from June 30 to July 4 so that 1 million pies reach service members. The bakery has donated these treats to troops since World War II + already sent over 1 million pies through past campaigns.  Local 3 News
  • Chain-Free Chattanooga builds free enclosures to give tethered dogs a safer space to play in Hamilton County. The nonprofit, founded in 2022, builds fences and doghouses for pets whose owners meet spay/neuter requirements and asks for donations to help cover its $1,200 material cost per project—helping improve the dogs’ well-being.  Local 3 News

CRIME NEWS

  • On June 25th, the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office said Michael Gibson, a Hixson tobacco shop employee who had already given his two-week notice with his last day on July 3, stole over $2,200 in lottery tickets—two books and several loose ones—from Smokin’ Joe’s Tobacco Shop on Hixson Pike, and arrest warrants for Theft Over $1,000 and Lottery Fraud will be filed.  Local 3 News
  • Hamilton County authorities re-arrested Sanel Durakovic for the 2020 murder of hairdresser Patrick Godwin—who worked at Tease Salon and was killed on January 7 in his front yard on Horseshoe Bend Lane in Ooltewah—after investigators revisited a dismissed charge amid missing evidence and testimony.  News Channel 9
  • On June 25th, 2015, truck driver Benjamin Brewer of Cool Runnings Express crashed his fully loaded semi-truck near Ooltewah, killing six people and injuring several others when he drove nearly 40 straight hours and tested positive for methamphetamine plus he was later convicted of vehicular homicide with a 55-year sentence as lawsuits forced his company into bankruptcy.  Local 3 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Starting July 1, new state laws will affect healthcare, education and criminal justice in Tennessee. The changes cover data privacy, covenant marriages, immigration and new child abuse penalties—plus driver license, military and public fund reforms.  Local 3 News
  • Chattanooga City Council members questioned tax incentive deals at Tuesday's meeting after an economic report showed that a PILOT agreement with Steam Logistics has so far created fewer than 100 jobs while the city provided over $500,000 in tax breaks. They also discussed delays in projects like The Bend and the East Chattanooga district and may add claw backs to public deals—aiming to better align public funds with promised benefits.  News Channel 9

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Tennessee Health Facilities Commission approved a joint rehabilitation facility in Cleveland for Siskin Hospital and Bradley Medical Center that will be located on the Westside Campus—renovations on the current building will begin in early fall so patients can access inpatient rehabilitation services—officials said.  Chattanooga Times Free Press

  • Chattanooga’s land bank is moving forward with its first affordable housing project as Wind River Built prepares to develop a two-bedroom modular home on a parcel along Oakland Avenue in the Alton Park area. The home will sell for under $200,000 and officials are reviewing 30 additional parcels to support similar projects—keeping the focus on lower-cost housing for first-time buyers.  Chattanooga Times Free Press
