EDUCATION NEWS

  • Hamilton County Schools reported higher state test scores in English language arts, math, science, and social studies this past school year—social studies improved by nearly three percentage points and transition grade students exceeded expected levels, showing strong progress from previous years.  Chattanooga Times Free Press

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Chattanooga Gas invested in renewable natural gas from Texas to supply local homes and businesses with energy that works with existing appliances. The purchase will prevent 3,416 metric tons of carbon dioxide from entering the air+ it supports the company’s goal of reaching net-zero operational emissions by 2050.  Local 3 News
  • Chattanooga Gas continues its efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by planning changes that will soon offer local households greener heating options—officials say more project details will be shared next.  Local 3 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On July 9, a judge ruled that the Chattanooga City Council violated the Open Meetings Act by holding secret meetings about redistricting on September 30, 2021, December 9, 2021, and February 15, 2022—council members must now submit semiannual compliance reports for one year.  Local 3 News
  • Chattanooga residents are debating a proposed change to the chicken law that would let people with lots under two acres raise up to eight hens instead of needing agricultural zoning or five acres. The change is aimed at reducing food waste and easing neighbor disputes — residents hope to find a middle ground that helps everyone.  Local 3 News
