ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A fire in a duplex on Dodson Avenue burned the attic on Monday morning and forced the Crawford Allen family, who had moved in just two weeks ago, to leave their new home — the American Red Cross is helping and a fundraiser has started to replace lost belongings.  News Channel 9
  • Chattanooga firefighters fought a blaze at an East Lake home early Thursday morning that caused the roof to sag and left several residents displaced—no injuries were reported and the fire's cause remains under investigation as the American Red Cross provides aid.  Local 3 News

CRIME NEWS

  • Benjamin Cook was indicted by a grand jury on 25 charges after he allegedly fired shots at a family sledding near the 6300 block of Stoney River Drive in Hamilton County on January 10 — he claimed the family was on his property.  News Channel 9
  • Two brothers have been indicted on charges related to a December shooting near Bojangles on Hwy 58—22-year-old Damien Bennett faces attempted first-degree murder, tampering with evidence, and reckless endangerment charges while his brother Patrick Bennett is charged with aggravated assault, and both are held on bond with a court appearance scheduled for August 18.  Local 3 News

  • Clyde Stubblefield, a renowned drummer from Chattanooga who played with James Brown, was honored on Thursday with a Tennessee Music Pathways marker — his work has influenced funk and rap and has been sampled on over 1,500 recordings.  Local 3 News
  • Today, demolition of Chattanooga's historic Car Barn—located at the northwest corner of Market and East Third Streets—is underway in downtown as developers clear the site for a new Drury Hotel; preservation group Preserve Chattanooga had urged the firm to save the historic facades but was not consulted.  News Channel 9

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Trooper Leigha Jones of the Tennessee Highway Patrol rescued a scrappy orange cat while patrolling Hamilton County during a hot day in Chattanooga and named the kitten Trooper as her new sidekick. High temperatures reached the 90s with the heat index over 100, prompting local officials to remind pet owners to keep their animals cool.  Chattanooga CW

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Minority Health Fair will be held tomorrow at UTC McKenzie Arena from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.—it starts with an 8:00 a.m. health walk and offers free screenings for mammograms, lung health, diabetes, stroke, and dental care while also providing legal and hearing services to improve access to care.
