GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At a Tuesday City Council meeting, city leaders debated funding pay raises for police and firefighters by exploring options such as a property tax increase that could raise nearly $16 million—along with proposals for a 3% yearly hike and budget cuts. Mayor Tim Kelly opposed eliminating the recycling program as a cost-saving measure, saying that such a move does not fit the city's values.  News Channel 9
  • Female inmates at McMinn County Jail completed a (10-hour) OSHA safety course provided by the McMinn Education Foundation and Adult Education, which lasted two to four weeks and taught work safety and accident prevention. They received certification cards and tips on interviews and resumes to help them find work after their release.  Local 3 News
  • Chattanooga City Council member Ron Elliott from Missionary Ridge proposed expanding the tax freeze program for homeowners 65 and older to include those with incomes up to $60,000 as rising property values have put many low-income residents at risk of displacement. He said the change will help seniors who rely on fixed incomes & federal aid while noting that the application period for 2024 taxes has already ended.  Chattanooga Times Free Press
  • Inmates at Bradley County Jail completed a 40-hour plumbing bootcamp at the Partners in Industry and Education Center in Cleveland to earn two NC3 RIDGID certifications—this program was arranged by Cleveland State Community College and the Bradley County Sheriff's Office and funded by City Fields. Participants met strict criteria, including no disciplinary issues and a release date of at least 60 days away, to help prepare for new careers after incarceration.  Local 3 News
  • Chattanooga City Council voted Tuesday to amend its zoning ordinance to add the Voluntary Incentives Program that gives developers benefits if they include attainable housing in their projects.
