BUSINESS NEWS

  • A nuclear fusion technology developer signed contracts with the Tennessee Valley Authority to purchase services from its specialized machining and maintenance shops in Northern Alabama — a deal that supports its efforts in nuclear fusion development. The agreement is a key step — part of the company’s plans to advance its technology.  Chattanooga Times Free Press
  • Between July 14th and 18th, the Hamilton County Clerk’s Office issued new business licenses to local companies in Chattanooga including a carniceria on Ringgold Road — a cafe at Parkridge also received a license, marking a boost to local business activity.  Chattanooga Times Free Press

CULTURE NEWS

  • Preserve Chattanooga is hosting a pen and paper drawing contest for youths 14-18 and adults to celebrate its 50th anniversary by capturing sketches of local architecture — entries are free and due by 5:00 p.m. on September 1 with winners announced on September 18 at the Chattanooga Preservation Awards.  Local 3 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • School districts across the Tennessee Valley have released varied start dates for the new school year; Chattooga County Schools begins on Friday, July 25 while other districts including Dayton, Rhea and McMinn plan abbreviated schedules and early dismissals on August 1 or later + several schools will start through early August.  Local 3 News
  • Summer break is ending as local school districts announce start dates for the new year; Bledsoe Schools will begin on August 4th while Murray County Schools will start on September 2nd.  News Channel 9
  • The Tennessee State Board of Education is considering dropping the world language requirement from public schools—officials formed a committee and will meet three more times this school year. Teachers, students and recent graduates collected over 2,700 petition signatures and are heading to Nashville today to oppose the proposal, which would take effect in the 2026-2027 school year if approved.  News Channel 9

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Chattanooga City Council passed an amended ordinance on Tuesday that would let residents with less than two acres raise up to eight laying hens — a measure intended to help families reduce grocery costs and manage pests while still banning roosters. The proposal now awaits a final reading on Tuesday, July 29.  News Channel 9
  • Chattanooga first responders are calling for pay increases after chiefs said low starting wages of $45,000 for police and $43,000 for firefighters force many to work extra jobs, and they warned that rising salary gaps may drive more responders away from the city. The city council will meet next Tuesday to review budget changes—Mayor Tim Kelly is expected to speak on the issue.  Local 3 News
  • Chattanooga City Councilman Chip Henderson proposed ending curbside recycling to save $1.3 million toward police and firefighter raises — a plan opposed by Mayor Tim Kelly who said it would cut less than one half of one percent from the city budget — and residents can still request a free recycling bin through the CHA311 system.  Local 3 News
