ECONOMY NEWS

  • Master Machine will invest $11.7 million to expand its Chattanooga manufacturing facility and add 44 new jobs. The company plans to install new machinery to support its nuclear utility customers—boosting the local industry.  News Channel 9
  • School starts next month so shoppers are taking advantage of Tennessee's tax free weekend that began Friday when many school supplies, clothes under $100, and personal computers under $1,500 are exempt from sales tax — buyers should review limits before buying.  News Channel 9

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Parents and teachers at Battle Academy are worried about a petition signed by 66% of Southside-Cowart residents that would reserve street parking only for residents—this change may make it hard for parents and school staff to reach the school. The PTA leader and other supporters plan to speak at Tuesday’s City Council meeting while some local voices back the proposal.  Local 3 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A water main break disrupted water service in Lookout Valley on Friday morning, and Tennessee American Water said crews worked for about six hours to finish repairs. The utility advised residents to run water if it appeared discolored or cloudy—conditions that cleared in 3 to 5 minutes.  Chattanooga CW
  • William Terry Ladd III, pastor of First Baptist Church on East 8th Street, was appointed on Friday by the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights to the Tennessee Advisory Committee. The committee studies local civil rights issues and offers recommendations for reforms.  Local 3 News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Baylor School graduate Nick Kurtz hit four home runs Friday night at Daikin Park as the Athletics beat the Astros, making him the first MLB rookie to achieve this feat while recording six hits, 19 total bases and eight RBIs—he also became the youngest player to reach this milestone with family watching. His historic performance adds to his standout season as he set a record that matched MLB's total bases standard in a single game.  Chattanooga Times Free Press
  • Red Bull will bring a daring climbing event to Chattanooga on Aug. 16—16 top climbers will race on a course built into Market Street Bridge that has water below. The event is part of the River Games and will include an open qualifier on Aug. 14 at High Point Climbing Gym where climbing legend Chris Sharma will set routes and guest commentator Sasha DiGiulian will join the show.  News Channel 9
