CRIME NEWS

  • Chattanooga police arrested 30-year-old Khavell Mailik Williams (July 29) in connection with a December 1 double homicide that killed a 61-year-old man on South Kelly Street and a 66-year-old woman on South Willow Street (he is charged with two counts of first-degree murder and is held at Hamilton County Jail).  Local 3 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Hamilton County Mayor Weston Wamp is proposing a $2.8 million allocation to upgrade emergency services with four new ambulances + simulators, training facilities, and apparatus improvements for six volunteer fire departments. The plan will be reviewed by the Hamilton County Commission on August 6.  Local 3 News
  • Hamilton County officials are divided over a plan to freeze property taxes for seniors on fixed incomes—Commissioner David Sharpe supports the measure to mirror the Chattanooga City Council while Mayor Weston Wamp argues that a freeze is unnecessary since tax rates did not rise this year.  News Channel 9
  • The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and city officials are planning to stabilize 1,900 feet of eroding streambank 2 miles down river from Chickamauga Dam to protect a nearby wastewater line and pumping station that is not in imminent danger. The project is in its feasibility phase and stakeholders can send comments by Aug. 6 — final plans will follow once funding is secured.  Chattanooga Times Free Press
  • Commissioner Warren Mackey has urged Hamilton County to approve a $1 million investment for a new cafeteria at Chattanooga Preparatory School—he said the upgrade will add 200 seats and did not give a timeline for his request.  News Channel 9

HEALTH NEWS

  • With the heat index rising above 100 degrees, Erlanger hospital warns residents to avoid outdoor activity during peak heat, stay hydrated, and wear loose clothing. The hospital has treated more than 20 patients this month for heat-related illnesses and advises seeking emergency care if symptoms like persistent cramps or dizziness worsen — experts say early signs include heavy sweating and intense thirst.  Local 3 News
  • The Austin Hatcher Foundation for Pediatric Cancer launches its 'Go Gold' campaign this fall in partnership with local businesses—like restaurants and salons—to raise funds for children with cancer and their families.  Local 3 News
