CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A high-speed police chase ended Monday on Riverside Drive when a Chattanooga driver sideswiped a patrol car and hit a utility pole near the Boathouse—police apprehended three of four occupants and charged 23-year-old Joseph Estes with aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Tyner Middle High Academy opened to high school students last spring, and this week middle schoolers attend for the first time—The new $96 million school now serves nearly 1,100 students and will celebrate with a grand opening on Monday, August 18. Local 3 News
- ➤ Chattanooga Prep School started its academic year Tuesday morning with a new CEO, principal, and several new teachers+ students joined the Chattanooga 300 Walk to mark the fresh start. The school, which faced serious issues last year, is working with community leaders and law enforcement to build a safer, stronger learning environment. Local 3 News
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Over the weekend, 21 volunteers rappelled from Gatlinburg’s Park Vista hotel to raise funds for Keep the Tennessee River Beautiful—an organization working to clean our river. The fundraiser raised $20,000 and will accept donations for two more weeks. News Channel 9
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Hamilton County Sheriff's Office added a new armored response vehicle— the Lenco Bear Cat-TEMS, bought through the 2023 Violent Crime Intervention Fund Grant for $334,169 and built with hardened armor and blast-resistant windows for extra safety. The vehicle is designed to serve as both a tactical ambulance and personnel carrier and can move up to 12 SWAT operators or 20 civilians during high-risk situations. Local 3 News
- ➤ Chattanooga got a new area code, 729, after a Tuesday start to a dialing period that now requires 10 digits for local calls; current phone numbers remain unchanged + only new lines may get 729 numbers after September 5. The change covers eastern Tennessee regions served by both 423 and 729. News Channel 9
- ➤ The city of Chattanooga plans to appeal a ruling that found its nonpublic meetings on redrawing voting districts violated open meetings laws—officials including the City Council, current and former members, filed a notice of appeal on Thursday. The appeal comes after a judge ruled in favor of the Chattanooga Times Free Press on the issue. Local 3 News
