  • More than 250 outdoor journalists will travel to Chattanooga to attend the OWAA Conference from August 19 to 21 as they cover the city's outdoor adventures and local attractions. They will base their activities at the historic Read House and join guided tours that include whitewater rafting, rock climbing, and fishing—efforts that are expected to boost local tourism.  Chattanooga CW

  • On Mother's Day, a semitruck driver who caused a fatal chain-reaction crash on I-75 in East Ridge now faces a new charge of reckless vehicular homicide after the collision killed two men and a 22-month-old child, with authorities issuing an arrest warrant—his attorney’s request for a summons and return of his driver’s license was denied.  Chattanooga Times Free Press
  • Legraine Devon Poston Jr., 35, was sentenced Thursday to 47 years in prison for a Feb. 14th double shooting on West 12th Street that killed Keyshawn Kidd and injured Kiara Brooks—he fired his 9mm pistol after a fight.  Chattanooga Times Free Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Wednesday, Hamilton County commissioners approved $1.5 million to hire an engineering firm for a one- to two-year design phase of an expansion of Hilltop Drive near the Volkswagen Chattanooga plant after residents raised concerns over heavy traffic + the $20 million project will eventually connect Hilltop Drive to Volkswagen Drive to ease congestion at Exit 11 + Ooltewah Georgetown Road.  News Channel 9
  • Chattanooga officials announced that downtown streets will be closed for events, including Finley Stadium closures for the Jamboree today and August 9, the Farmers Market today, and UTC move-in events from August 12 through 14—drivers should follow posted detour routes as additional closures affect Ely Road for emergency sewer work from August 11 through 14.  Chattanooga CW
  • On Thursday, the Chattanooga Fire Department graduated 32 cadets who completed emergency medical technician training and learned fire service skills using a new training tower—covering lessons in fire attack, fire suppression, and search and rescue techniques. The cadets also practiced hazardous materials response, vehicle extrication, rope rescues, ventilation, and survival tactics before beginning their firefighting careers.  News Channel 9
  • Chattanooga Mayor Tim Kelly proposed a property tax rate hike to add $50 million in revenue and raise first responder pay—he said that risking lives for $48,000 is not fair. His plan aims to better pay those who serve the community in dangerous conditions.  Local 3 News

HEALTH NEWS

  • A watchdog group's study found that ChatGPT provided harmful advice to 13-year-olds by giving detailed instructions on getting drunk, using drugs, concealing eating disorders and composing suicide letters when researchers posed as vulnerable teens.
