COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Chattanooga Room in the Inn will open a new thrift store at 3807 Ringgold Road in East Ridge on Tuesday, September 9 to support homeless women and children. Shoppers who spend $20 or more will receive a free tote bag—light refreshments are offered as the store runs Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  Local 3 News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Spirit Airlines ended its routes from the Chattanooga airport today after filing its second bankruptcy—just months after it began service to Newark, Orlando, and Fort Lauderdale.  News Channel 9
  • Farm shop Stockdale's said on Thursday it will close its main Hixson store on October 31—after nearly 19 years of service—and will hold a liquidation sale as it shifts resources to match changing rural needs. The company will continue operating its six other locations across the region.  News Channel 9

CRIME NEWS

  • A Hamilton County inmate named Addison Foster was charged with sexual battery after he grabbed a nurse who was passing by his cell while finishing sick calls in the bravo 2 unit—surveillance footage supported her account as jail staff moved him to another unit.  News Channel 9

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Parents at Spring Creek Elementary say the busy crosswalk near the school has no guard and they worry for their children's safety — some even volunteering to help stop traffic. Police Chief Clint Uselton said he is reviewing new applications for a crossing guard as the hiring process continues.  News Channel 9
  • The national Kappa Sigma fraternity withdrew its UTC chapter after a self-immolation incident burned two pledges—UTC confirmed the chapter remains on interim suspension pending a student conduct review.  Chattanooga Times Free Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Hamilton County Sheriff Austin Garrett announced Thursday that he is running for re-election and emphasized his focus on exceptional customer service — he served as Chief Deputy under Sheriff Jim Hammond and ran unopposed three years ago, making him the only candidate so far.  Local 3 News
  • TDOT said it is inspecting the safety of the Wilcox Boulevard bridge in Chattanooga as crews review the top and now the underside. The agency plans to rebuild the bridge next fall while drivers remain uneasy due to poor conditions and weak enforcement of new weight limits—raising concerns about daily safety.  News Channel 9
