  • On Saturday, Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP) partnered with Lowe's on Gunbarrel Road to build and deliver bunkbeds for local children as the nonprofit works to aid the 2-3% of children nationwide without a bed.  Local 3 News
  • United Way of Greater Chattanooga announced it distributed $686K in catalyst funds to 21 local organizations to help families manage rising expenses. Local nonprofits BetterFi and Two Bikes Chattanooga will use their funds to boost financial programs and hire high school interns for bike repair training — efforts aimed at easing local financial burdens.  Chattanooga Times Free Press

CULTURE NEWS

  • This week, local events offer a range of cultural and family-friendly experiences across the Chattanooga area—featuring art exhibits, museum programs and live comedy and music shows scheduled from today through next week. Residents can visit venues including public libraries, theaters and galleries to enjoy festivals with food, crafts and historical tours—highlighting a Hunter exhibit among the varied offerings.  Chattanooga Times Free Press

  • In July, Wacker Chemical Corp. laid off 90 workers from its Bradley County plant—Astec announced plans to reduce its Hamilton County workforce amid signs of economic cooling.  Chattanooga Times Free Press

  • Parents at Loftis Middle are worried after a student threatened over text to bring a gun to school this week and received a temporary suspension. The Hamilton County Sheriff's Office and school say no gun was found—parents say better communication is needed.  Local 3 News

  • Mortgage recasting lets homeowners lower monthly payments by using a large lump sum to reduce the loan balance without refinancing—this method avoids high closing costs and credit checks but may not be available on government-backed loans.  Chattanooga Times Free Press
  • The Better Business Bureau in Chattanooga warns consumers that old 'zombie debt' may reappear unexpectedly as outdated accounts are sold to collectors—this could affect credit if payments are made without proper validation, so consumers should review old records and request a debt validation letter.  Chattanooga Times Free Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A former TVA planning manager warned that after a summer of record power demand, the utility may face electricity shortages this winter due to natural gas supply risks and reliance on imported power—factors that could increase blackout risks if extreme cold strikes.  Chattanooga Times Free Press
  • Hamilton County paid nearly $1.1 million in taxpayer funds from January through August 2024 to settle 106 cases of bodily injury, property damage and other claims, records show—83 for property damage and 20 for bodily injury. One case received $150,000 for bodily injury—settlements over $25,000 required approval from the County Commission.  Chattanooga Times Free Press

  • Kennedy writes about his late wife Wetherly becoming a registered organ donor—her gift helped save lives by providing lungs, kidneys and liver to critically ill patients—and explains how the medallion from Tennessee Donor Services reminds families to consider signing up. SPORTS NEWS

  • The Mocs recorded their first win of the season by defeating Stetson 63-0 at Finley Stadium on Saturday night after two losses, with quarterback Camden Orth gaining 118 rushing yards and three touchdowns while the team amassed 445 yards overall. The team will play its third road game next Saturday—facing Tarleton State for its final nonconference match before Southern Conference play.  Chattanooga Times Free Press
