COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Chattanooga Fire Department rescued a kitten from a homeless encampment fire and McKamey Animal Center treated its burns—now the kitten, named Singe, has recovered and been adopted by a local family. The rescue, care, and adoption show a strong community effort to save animals.  Local 3 News
  • The Salvation Army of Chattanooga is hosting in-person Angel Tree registration during the last week of September at East Lake Corps and the first week of October at Citadel. Families with children 0 to 12 and seniors 60 and older must bring valid ID and required documents — including birth certificates and proof of income — to sign up.  Local 3 News
  • Chattanooga is hosting a busy weekend of events including ticketed bluegrass performances by the Wood Brothers and East Nash Grass at Miller Park, Miller Plaza, and Patten Square with free local shows at One Chattanooga Stage and an arts and craft vendor market along Market Street; residents can also join historical hikes at the Chickamauga Battlefield starting at 9 a.m., explore antiques at the Ringgold Junk Market from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and enjoy the free Sunflower Stables Barn Sale and Market at Aubie Smith Farm in Ooltewah — bluegrass and gospel music will be featured.  Local 3 News
  • More than 50 children from the Tennessee Valley will attend the Battle of the Bricks at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Sunday, September 21 for Childhood Cancer Awareness Month—organizers say the event will offer driver meet-and-greets, autograph sessions, and racetrack experiences. The Austin Hatcher Foundation and IMSA coordinate the initiative as part of the Resilient Racers program.  Local 3 News
  • St. Nicholas School in Chattanooga invites families to join a free fall event on Sept. 20 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on its 24-acre campus — featuring face painting, a fire truck visit at 10:30 a.m., playground fun, refreshments, cotton candy and story time with librarian Laura Stephens at 11:30 a.m.  Local 3 News

CULTURE NEWS

  • At Memorial Auditorium in Chattanooga, a full and excited crowd saw East Nash Grass kick off the 36th International Bluegrass Music Association Awards show with hosts Steve Martin and Alison Brown leading lively performances—award winners such as Billy Strings and inductees including the Bluegrass Cardinals were honored.  Chattanooga Times Free Press

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Thursday night, the Hamilton County School Board met and implemented new policies after ending its contract with Centerstone, as protests erupted over the decision. Board members proposed measures—like background checks for Centerstone staff—while demonstrators outside called for the return of mental health services for students.  News Channel 9
  • Hamilton County Schools announced they will partner with Volkswagen to launch an engineering program at the Franklin-Roberts Future Ready Center— a new hub where high school students will train for engineering careers. Volkswagen will invest over $3 million in the program that is set to open in the 2026-27 school year.  Chattanooga Times Free Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Red Bank started a two-week paid parental leave policy for eligible workers on July 1. The new benefit helps mothers and fathers after having or adopting a child + aims to keep the city a top workplace.  Local 3 News
  • Soddy-Daisy city officials debated merging their 911 dispatch service with Hamilton County at a meeting Thursday night—city manager Burt Johnson said the plan would reduce costs even though dispatcher pay might drop. One dispatcher warned that the consolidation could put some jobs at risk.  News Channel 9
  • Hamilton County Commissioners voted unanimously to trial a new 4:00 p.m. Wednesday meeting time starting on November 5 — the change will run until January and is intended to boost public attendance.  Local 3 News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Fat Boy’s on Apisan Pike and Rebel Drive-In failed their health inspections this week after inspectors found cockroaches, improper food storage, and unsanitary conditions in both restaurants.  Local 3 News
  • Erlanger Health's radiologists are in talks with United Healthcare about fair payment for pediatric imaging — the contract may change on Jan. 1 without an agreement. They warn that low reimbursement rates could make it hard to keep trained pediatric specialists and affect care for children under Medicaid.  Chattanooga Times Free Press
