COMMUNITY NEWS

  • John H. Luckadoo — a Chattanooga native and the last surviving pilot from the storied 100th Bombardment Group — died Sept 1 in Dallas at 103 from congestive heart failure. He flew B-17 missions in World War II and later worked in commercial real estate.  Chattanooga Times Free Press
  • After Helene disrupted school weekend meal programs, local organizations stepped in to support food distribution hubs that provided meals to students across the state—especially in Cherokee County.  Local 3 News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The United Auto Workers is gauging support for a strike at the Volkswagen Chattanooga plant after the company made its final offer, which includes a 20% wage increase through 2029, a cost-of-living boost, lower health care costs, profit-sharing and bonus payments. The union will decide soon if the strike should be authorized—moving negotiations closer to a final resolution.  Chattanooga Times Free Press
  • Calliope Restaurant is adjusting to life after being named one of the Top-50 Best Restaurants to eat at in America by New York Times — the establishment is reviewing its operations to reflect its new recognition.  Local 3 News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Chattanooga Public Library will host its annual Maker Day on October 11 from 10:00am to 4:00pm at the Downtown Library’s 4th Floor Makerspace, where free workshops on crafts are offered. The Library is accepting online applications for vendors, presenters, entrepreneurs and artists until September 30 — seats are limited.  Local 3 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At Ivy Academy, teacher Heidi Gaines uses the Doughboys project to teach five special needs students how to read recipes, measure ingredients, and bake bread — lessons that build their entrepreneurial skills as they sell $7 loaves and boost their confidence. Their hands-on class, which uses eggs from the school chicken coop, has improved attendance and friendship among the students.  News Channel 9
  • Hamilton County Schools ended its agreement with Centerstone after an August board vote, leaving at least 190 students without school-based mental health services; other districts like Marion and Bradley continue to provide therapy with private providers. Parents say the sudden loss of in-school support has made it harder for families to access needed mental health care.  News Channel 9

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Chattanooga has installed traffic cameras near Hamilton County schools and smart streetlights at mid-block crosswalks to improve safety for drivers and pedestrians. The cameras will be activated on October 6 with a 30-day warning period that includes a $50 fine for speeding violations while police monitor Orchard Knob Elementary and Brainerd High School, and the new streetlights will provide real-time video coverage using Cellular Vehicle-to-Everything technology.  Local 3 News

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Walk for Apraxia—largest event to raise funds and awareness for children with speech challenges—will take place this weekend in Chattanooga to support Apraxia Kids programs.  News Channel 9

SPORTS NEWS

  • Developer Andy Stone led tours of the construction site at Erlanger Park and praised the new stadium that will be the future home of the Chattanooga Lookouts—Florida officials are impressed by its progress. The stadium is under construction and will open in April.  Chattanooga Times Free Press
  • Ooltewah High School's volleyball team hosted its 18th pink out game to support breast cancer awareness and honor head coach Elaine Peigen— a survivor who inspired the event. Supporters handed out pink roses and raised funds for the MaryEllen Locher Scholarship Fund to help children with parents who have battled breast cancer.  Local 3 News
  • Tennessee Volunteers coach Josh Heupel said his team will face an improved Mississippi State Bulldogs squad on Saturday at Starkville at 4:15 p.m. on SEC Network—he also praised defensive back Boo Carter for his strong play in the 56–24 win over UAB.  Chattanooga Times Free Press
