EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Hamilton County Commission approved $13.5 million in bond funds yesterday to renovate over a dozen schools with nearly half the money set for new turf fields—while the rest will pay for paving, roofing and flooring repairs. The largest project is at the Chattanooga School of Arts and Sciences, where about $4.5 million will build a new stadium and turf field. Chattanooga Times Free Press
- ➤ BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee launched a paid apprenticeship program that lets recent high school graduates and adult learners earn a degree from Chattanooga State Community College while gaining work experience—offering a pathway to build skills for a career in the health field. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Hamilton County's seasonal burn ban began October 1, allowing residents to apply for a permit to burn brush and vegetation until April 30—and those in Chattanooga, Collegedale, East Ridge, Red Bank or Ridgeside pay a $60 fee with inspection while other residents pay $10. Hamilton County 911 said the ban has proven effective in meeting federal air quality health standards. Local 3 News
- ➤ Chattanooga’s RainSmart program will pay to install native plants—like coneflower and milkweed—that help absorb rain into the soil and reduce runoff. The program also covers rain barrels and rain gardens to keep water from pooling on hard surfaces. Chattanooga CW
- ➤ Chattanooga launched two pilot programs on October 1st that provide free curbside pickup of food scraps and glass for 750 residents in the Brainerd and Belvoir areas and drop-off compost kiosks for an additional 250 residents—local firms NewTerra Compost and Overlooked Materials are partnering with the city to reduce landfill waste and methane emissions. - ➤ Chattanooga will test a new paving material that could make roads last 10 to 15 years longer while lowering costs by half—city official Jerramy Wood said crews demonstrated the compound last month and noted it sets in 30 minutes. News Channel 9
- ➤ City officials said the city will use a $500,000 BRAG grant at Chattanooga Skate Park—planned for site prep for a new multi-modal park and skate facility—and a $30,000 Norfolk Southern grant at DuPont Park for cleanup and trail work, with improvements to start this winter and early spring. - ➤ Hamilton County's hazmat team received a fire department title in 2020 to secure insurance plus county officials now face legal questions as the title was not approved by the Hamilton County Commission as required by state law. - ➤ A new bridge on Apison Pike in Hamilton County now bears the name of local hero Desmond T. Doss—a Medal of Honor recipient who saved many soldiers during World War II. The naming honors his bravery and ensures his legacy will be remembered in our community. News Channel 9
