COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Over 30 living Medal of Honor recipients have gathered in Chattanooga this week for the first Medal of Honor Celebration—honoring the area's historic military ties with outreach events at local sites. They will attend the Patriot Awards Gala at the Convention Center tomorrow to further recognize acts of valor.  Chattanooga Times Free Press

  • Chattanooga businesses and nonprofits announced appointments and promotions, with Keri Randolph named as president of the Benwood Foundation Board and Jeff Grady hired as a mortgage loan officer at First Horizon Bank—other roles were filled at Signal Centers, HHM Wealth Advisors, and Chattanooga Neighborhood Enterprise.  Chattanooga Times Free Press

CULTURE NEWS

  • Chattanooga Pride hosts a week of events leading to the free festival at Ross’s Landing, with a drag and wrestling show happening today at The Boneyard, a family field day scheduled on Saturday at St. Elmo Park, and a free parade with the festival set for Sunday. EDUCATION NEWS

  • Tony Womac, a dedicated teacher at Dayton City School, overcame a severe spine injury from a diving accident and now shows his students that everyone can succeed. He has spent 25 years in the classroom and 40 years coaching swimming—he also hosts a podcast that spreads his message of determination.  Local 3 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Chattanooga was selected to host the 2025 Medal of Honor Celebration to honor 61 living recipients from a total of 3,528 honorees—city officials say the event will recognize the bravery of those still alive.  Local 3 News
  • More than 32,000 federal workers in Tennessee are affected by the government shutdown — including TSA officers at 17 airports who work without pay — and families may soon face cuts to SNAP and WIC if funds run out. Nonprofits like One Generation Away in Franklin are stepping in to distribute food boxes to assist those hit hardest as demand increases.  News Channel 9
  • Chattanooga and Hamilton County are building three large water basins along I-75 to hold up to 40 million gallons of extra water and reduce wastewater overflow; the project began in September 2024 and will finish in February 2027—some residents near the South Chickamauga Creek Greenway have reported strong odors. This upgrade is part of an effort to meet a consent decree with the EPA and state authorities.  Local 3 News
  • Federal services in the Tennessee Valley are operating with some changes amid the government shutdown. The SSA office in Chattanooga is open with reduced staff, while Veterans Affairs, the local food bank, the airport, and National Parks continue to offer service—although some programs may face limits.  Local 3 News
  • Five McMinn County jail inmates completed an HVAC bootcamp held at the sheriff's office by CSCC Workforce Development and earned an EPA certification, officials said.  Local 3 News
  • Chattanooga Mayor Tim Kelly answered live viewer questions on Local 3 News at 4 on Thursday. He discussed negotiations between Volkswagen and the UAW, the federal government shutdown, plans to repave major roads, and juvenile summer crime statistics — topics raised during his interview.  Local 3 News

HEALTH NEWS

  • A Cleveland McDonald's on 25th Street nearly failed its health inspection when inspectors found dirty dishes, a broken dishwasher that did not sanitize correctly, and unsafely stored food, so the restaurant must use a sink for chemical sanitization until repairs are made — other local establishments scored 100.  Local 3 News

  • Baylor and McCallie renew their intense rivalry today at Spears Stadium at 7:45 p.m.—McCallie released its annual hype video to spotlight its winning history. The teams have a long record with McCallie winning six of the last seven state titles and five of their last six games decided by a score or less.  Local 3 News
