Good morning, Chattanooga. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 8th of October.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The 2025 Southeast Tennessee State of Homelessness Report by the Chattanooga Homeless Coalition shows over 1,000 people have faced homelessness—a 12% rise driven by high rent, with 82 children, 111 young heads-of-household, and a 32% increase among veterans. The report calls for more rehousing programs such as Permanent Supportive Housing and Rapid Rehousing to help those in need.  Local 3 News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Volkswagen’s Chattanooga-made ID.4 sales jumped 176% in the third quarter after 12,470 units were sold compared to 4,518 a year ago. The automaker has already furloughed 160 workers as it slows production after federal EV tax credits ended on Sept. 30.  Chattanooga Times Free Press

CULTURE NEWS

  • Chattanooga will host a busy weekend with Oktoberfest at First Horizon Pavilion featuring Bavarian food and live music — many other fall events include markets, corn mazes and haunted houses at local sites like the Chattanooga Choo Choo and Zoo. Attendees can choose from free gatherings to paid festivals that offer local music, crafts and seasonal fun.  Chattanooga Times Free Press

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Northgate Mall is seeking City Council approval for a tax financing deal that will fund a $15 million upgrade to its aging sewer and stormwater systems—part of a plan to transform the mall into a mixed-use town center. The Industrial Development Board approved the proposed TIF and a public hearing is set for November 3rd—offering the community a chance to review the economic impact plan.  News Channel 9

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Grace Baptist Academy resumed rebuilding its campus after a 2020 tornado and is using federal funds transferred by TEMA — about one-third of a $37 million grant is now in its bank — to pay construction bills. The school will complete the first phase and move into the new facility by fall while continuing to fundraise for full outfitting.  Local 3 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Chattanooga City Council approved a $1.8 million plan to purchase a 107-foot Smeal ladder truck and add 15 firefighter positions for Station 21 on East Brainerd Road using funds from the FY26 budget amendment. Chattanooga Fire Department officials say the new ladder truck is expected to arrive by the end of the month to close a coverage gap and improve emergency response.  Local 3 News
  • The Chattanooga Police Department now provides incident reports, background checks and traffic reports for free if only one copy is requested, following an audit that found processing fees exceeded actual costs. The change was approved in a unanimous city council vote Tuesday night, and while reports are available to any Tennessee ID holder, traffic reports remain restricted to attorneys and those named in the report—city arrest records will now be issued solely through Hamilton County—helping reduce public expenses.  Chattanooga Times Free Press

HEALTH NEWS

  • Starting next week, the USDA will drop oral rabies vaccine baits in Hamilton, Bradley, Marion, McMinn, Meigs, Polk, and Monroe counties from October 14 through October 30 using low-flying planes and helicopters to protect wildlife from rabies. Pet owners are advised to keep pets on a leash and follow USDA guidelines if a pet ingests bait — contact with saliva should be avoided to prevent stomach upset.  Chattanooga CW
  • Hamilton, Catoosa and Walker county health departments inspect restaurants twice a year using a 100-point grading system. The latest report shows violations such as thawed hot dogs in sinks and raw meats stored next to food that is ready to eat — scores do not include on-the-spot fixes.  Chattanooga Times Free Press

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Soddy-Daisy’s Fresh Burger Grill on Dayton Pike now focuses on serving fresh, quality burgers—once a second location for Merv’s, it looks to bring a new flavor experience for local diners. The review notes the grill’s emphasis on fresh ingredients to offer a different dining option.  Chattanooga Times Free Press
