CRIME NEWS

  • Teacher Nathan Dawson received a reprimand in Georgia in 2017 for texting 61 messages with a student and had his contract not renewed by Hamilton County in February after investigators found he was not truthful, yet he remains employed in Walker County as a former Central High student alleges an inappropriate relationship—further concerns include a DUI charge from July and unresolved hiring record questions.  News Channel 9

CULTURE NEWS

  • This weekend from Oct 10—12, several fall celebrations will take place in Chattanooga. Family-friendly events include the Halloween Trail Fest at Enterprise South Nature Park with trick-or-treat trails and glow paths on Friday and Saturday, the Chattanooga Market Oktoberfest at First Horizon Pavilion featuring live music and German foods, and Porchfest in Highland Park with local artists kicking off with a party at White Duck Taco.  Local 3 News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation now requires water utilities to test biosolids for PFAS before they are used on farms, with testing completed 90 days after permit issuance and again each year. Biosolids use continues in Northeast Tennessee—Bristol utility Mark Quickle said sampling began after community input while plans to address high PFAS levels remain undecided.  News Channel 9

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • An IRS taxpayer assistance office on Uptain Road in Chattanooga closed Oct.8 because of a federal government shutdown that has lasted six business days—its door displayed a notice warning taxpayers the office would remain closed until further notice. The office had stayed open the first week using funding from a 2022 law.  Chattanooga Times Free Press
  • 311 data shows thousands of Chattanooga residents are still waiting for their curbside brush pick-up—most requests are overdue.  Chattanooga Times Free Press
  • Soddy-Daisy officials announced that they will merge their 911 dispatch services with Hamilton County's system to boost response times and save $600,000—money that will be funneled into other city programs while maintaining the six current telecommunicators' positions. Some residents voiced concerns that the change may lessen the local personal touch, but city leaders stressed that the upgrade will introduce advanced tools such as real-time GPS tracking for first responders.  News Channel 9
  • Hamilton County said Wednesday it planned to preserve 1,300 acres at McDonald Farm and set aside over 500 acres at Enterprise South for industrial development—expected to save taxpayers over $320 million—while Mayor Weston Wamp noted the proposal now awaits review by the County Commission and City Council.  News Channel 9
  • Chattanooga Police Department will participate in National Night Out on October 14—hosting events at 11 city sites where residents can meet officers and enjoy family-friendly activities, including a citywide gathering at Silverdale Baptist Church on Bonny Oaks Drive from 5:00–7:30. This event will offer varied activities at different locations throughout the evening.  Local 3 News

HEALTH NEWS

  • In Chattanooga, tiny Asian woolly hackberry aphids are gathering on hackberry trees and leaving sticky honeydew that helps black sooty mold grow, which may make allergies worse. Experts say the bugs mostly harm surfaces and suggest washing down affected areas and using natural predators—like ladybugs—to help control the buildup.  News Channel 9

SPORTS NEWS

  • Jason Banks, a local powerlifter who overcame severe injuries, will compete at the Pro Olympia Powerlifting event this weekend in Las Vegas—he hopes to bring pride to Chattanooga and inspire local athletes. Banks also trains others and works closely with local competitors as he prepares for a strong showing.  Local 3 News
