- ➤ UTC has officially recognized Turning Point USA as a registered student organization after the Dean of Students Office confirmed that students met all registration requirements—this decision comes after the Student Government Association voted against a recommendation to approve the chapter on October 7. - ➤ Dozens of students spoke at the Hamilton County School Board meeting on Thursday afternoon to discuss mental health access in schools after the board ended its deal with Centerstone in August over concerns about background checks and transparency+ the district opened a Request for Proposals for new mental health providers and Centerstone expressed interest in returning under revised terms. - ➤ Federal services in the Tennessee Valley have been impacted by the government shutdown. The IRS office on Uptain Road in Chattanooga closed on October 9 while the Social Security office on Premier Drive operates with a reduced staff—VA services, the food bank, airport operations and Great Smoky Mountains National Park remain open. - ➤ Chattanooga Public Works reported a backlog of over 8,000 open 311 requests for brush pickup, bulk trash, and roadway distress across the city. Public Works Administrator Jerramy Wood said his team is testing new pickup routes and methods—aiming to find a solution for the service challenges. Local 3 News
- ➤ The IRS taxpayer assistance office on Uptain Road in Chattanooga remains closed due to the government shutdown that began on October 1—there is no word yet on when it will reopen. Local 3 News

- ➤ Dubs Place on Dayton Boulevard in Red Bank failed its health inspection this week—inspectors found cockroaches, raw eggs stored near ready-to-eat vegetables, and an employee handling food without washing hands. - ➤ Medical advances have lowered heart attack deaths with fast treatment and less smoking—Dr. Bill Warren of the Chattanooga Heart Institute said treatment times at Memorial are under 30 minutes—but rising obesity, diabetes and poor exercise habits are causing an increase in other heart-related deaths, making early prevention important.
