COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Brainerd Food Pantry is celebrating its fifth anniversary after serving over one million meals to nearly 25,000 families in the community. It operates twice a month at the Brainerd United Methodist Church—while rising food costs have forced many seniors to make hard choices.  Local 3 News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Beignets and Brew opened its new restaurant on Shallowford Road on Oct-8, serving square beignets dusted in powdered sugar to local diners. The cafe builds on a centuries-old food tradition to offer a fresh twist on a classic treat for the community.  Chattanooga Times Free Press
  • Volkswagen released the full text of its final offer for Chattanooga employees after the UAW did not share it, urging workers to vote for transparency. The offer includes a 20% wage increase through 2029, a $4,000 bonus plus an extra $1,500 if approved by Oct. 31—moves that follow nearly a year of tough negotiations on wages, healthcare, and work policies.  Chattanooga Times Free Press

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Tennessee officials celebrated SK Food Group’s grand opening of a 525,000 square foot facility in Bradley County’s Spring Branch Industrial Park on October 13—bringing more than 800 jobs to the area. The site is the first stage of a three-phase project that will add up to 840 jobs by 2030 and uses the latest automated technology for food handling.  Local 3 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Two teachers from Hamilton and Whitfield Counties were honored Monday with fellowship awards from the Coolidge National Medal of Honor Heritage Center—Haleigh Van Allen was named the 2025 Katie Fields Bell Teacher Fellow and David Veve received the first General B.B. Bell Teacher Fellow award, with each receiving $1,000 for classroom or professional development expenses.  News Channel 9

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Tennessee residents planning to burn debris or leaves must get a permit as fall fire season begins this week, and state agencies warn that dry weather increases wildfire risk. The department advises checking local rules and following safety tips (permits are required from October 15th to May 15th) to prevent fires.  News Channel 9

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A portion of the Tennessee Riverwalk Walking Bridge from Riverpark Rowing Center to UTC Scrappy Moore practice fields will close for six months starting October 20 for reconstruction that includes sidewalk widening, enhanced lighting and landscaping—Hamilton County has posted signs at both ends.  Local 3 News
  • Hamilton County is considering a plan to swap land at McDonald Farm and Enterprise South that would keep 1,300 acres for parks while setting aside 500 acres for factories— a change that might affect the Atlas Bike Trail among 97 miles of park trails. The plan needs approval by the Hamilton County Commission and the Chattanooga City Council before it moves forward.  Local 3 News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Signal Mountain Fire Department will host a lifesaving CPR training class on November 1—seats are limited to 12, so interested participants should sign up soon to secure a spot.  Local 3 News
  • Two Minnesota men, Jason Lennox and former NFL player Everson Griffen, will walk 307 miles through Appalachian states to raise funds for mental health and addiction programs and will stop in Chattanooga Sunday after noon before heading to Nashville. The walk is part of Lennox’s Recovery Road campaign—designed to spark conversation and renewed investment in mental health services.  Local 3 News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Chattanooga Red Wolves Academy is launching a free youth soccer program — TOPSoccer — for children with mental or physical disabilities at Camp Jordan from October 16 to November 6 at 7 to 8 p.m. The program, run by volunteers and supported by Special Programs, will foster teamwork, confidence, and social skills in the community.  News Channel 9
  • Boyd Buchanan senior David Green had a career night last Thursday as he rushed for 223 yards and scored three touchdowns in a 49-28 win over Silverdale Baptist—earning him Times Free Press Player of the Week honors and helping his team climb to No.1 in Division II-AA state rankings. He also drew scholarship interest after an official visit to West Point.  Chattanooga Times Free Press
