Good morning, Chattanooga. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 22nd of August.

CRIME NEWS

  • UTC sent an active shooter alert at 12:42 p.m. Thursday to staff and students, instructing them to run—hide—fight, and police later said there was no threat on campus and no victims were found.  Chattanooga CW
  • Nearly a year after a hazing incident at UTC, open records show that Kappa Sigma pledges took part in dangerous rituals such as setting themselves on fire and squeezing lemon juice in their eyes—two students suffered second-degree burns and had to be hospitalized, and Todd Shelton from the Hazing Prevention Network said power dynamics make these acts risky even if social media makes them seem fun.  News Channel 9
  • Deputies found human remains on Bowerman Lane in south Meigs County while checking on a man missing for up to a month from a dilapidated mobile home – investigators recovered portions of bones and clothing and say further tests will confirm if the remains are those of Monty Ritter – foul play is not expected.  Chattanooga Times Free Press
  • A student was arrested at East Hamilton High School on Wednesday morning when a deputy stopped a suspicious vehicle and found a stolen pistol and loaded magazine— the student resisted search and now faces charges of aggravated assault, possession of a firearm on school property, and theft.  Chattanooga Times Free Press

CULTURE NEWS

  • Tom Mundell became the new president and CEO of the National Medal of Honor Heritage Center earlier this month and said he will boost education and fundraising efforts to honor the past and inspire future generations ahead of the Sept. 29-Oct. 4 Medal of Honor Celebration — a key event that highlights Chattanooga’s long military history — drawing on his Air Force service and his previous work in South Carolina.  Chattanooga Times Free Press

FINANCE NEWS

  • After two years of corporate tax breaks, Tennessee’s corporate tax revenue dropped 15.8% (by $721.5 million) while sales tax collections increased 4.2% (by $596 million) to support its $59.8 billion budget. Senate Finance Chair Bo Watson said the state now relies on consumer spending, even as critics worry that low-income families are hit by the shift.  Chattanooga Times Free Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Chattanooga Mayor Tim Kelly’s office argued on Thursday that a competing tax plan from Council member Chip Henderson would force layoffs and cut key services while his plan—priced at $1.93 per $100—aims to fund important city needs such as road paving and fire station staffing. Former official Ryan Ewalt warned that a tax increase could raise housing costs and called for a budget that focuses only on critical public safety pay.  Chattanooga Times Free Press
