COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A local ministry, Broken Healer Home, withdrew its application for a transitional home in an East Brainerd neighborhood after facing neighbor opposition and a denied rezoning request—now it is exploring alternative sites such as back-tax properties to support young adults aging out of foster care. Nirva Ache said the ministry hopes to find a location that meets county guidelines and serves the urgent community need.  Chattanooga Times Free Press
  • Hamilton County is calling for volunteers for the Halloween Trail Fest at Enterprise South Nature Park on October 10 and 11; interested helpers must sign up by October 3 to assist with decorations, build scenes, act in the trails, attend inflatables and paint faces. The event will run from 6:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. — it will also include food trucks, a bonfire and trick or treating.  Local 3 News

  • Between Sept. 2 and Sept. 5, Hamilton County issued new business licenses to local companies including Food For The Soul and The French Quarter—details from the county clerk’s office list addresses and licensee names for each business.  Chattanooga Times Free Press

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Tyner Academy announced new security measures for football games following fights at a recent match—starting October 31, all spectators must carry clear bags, show ID, and pass a metal detector check while students must attend with an adult guardian.  News Channel 9
  • UTC will have Free Application Week from September 15—20, during which it will waive all application fees for students using the code FREEAPP26. The university says this initiative will help ease the application process for students during Tennessee College Application and Exploration Month.  Local 3 News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A new AI study by UTK and tech firm TreisD will predict sinkholes on Chattanooga roadways after last month's historic flooding—local officials say a large sinkhole on Heritage Landing Drive may take up to six months to repair.  News Channel 9
  • A study published Wednesday in Nature links 55 heat waves from 2000 to 2023 to human-caused climate change driven by 180 major fossil fuel and cement producers, who are responsible for 57% of carbon emissions from 1850 to 2023. Scientists say the research may be used in legal cases to hold polluters accountable for extreme weather impacts.  Chattanooga Times Free Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • After a Tuesday morning Walker County bus crash injured 10 children, local residents and experts urged lawmakers to require seatbelts on school buses—arguing that a failed bill and past tragedies show a need for stronger safety measures.  Local 3 News
  • Hamilton County commissioners debated moving weekly meetings from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. to allow more day workers to attend, a proposal that would cost taxpayers about $49,000 a year. They voted to study the idea further in the Rules and Legislation Committee meeting next week (including costs for clerk, sheriff’s office, and general government fees) (further details pending).  News Channel 9
  • At Tuesday’s council meeting, the city budget provided a new Ladder 21 for the Chattanooga Fire Department, which is assigned to Station 21 on East Brainerd Road to close an emergency coverage gap — the department said the truck will improve firefighter safety and help save lives.  Local 3 News

SPORTS NEWS

  • UTC freshman cornerback KJ Sejour, who enrolled in January, earned playing time when he started in last Saturday's game at Tennessee Tech after starter Taylor Smallwood was injured. Coaches said his focus and talent will help him improve — key as UTC prepares for their home opener against Stetson Saturday at 6 p.m.  Chattanooga Times Free Press
